Founded in 1350, Ayutthaya was Thailand’s second capital
(after Sukhothai) for 417 years, until it was destroyed
by the Burmese in 1767. Since then, Bangkok has become
the third capital.
Ayutthaya was named UNESCO World Heritage in 1991
because of its characteristic brick and stucco
architecture. It is simply an excellent witness to the
period of development of true Thai national art.

Currently, the Thai government has contracted with local
artisans to produce Thai bricks made using traditional
skills. These bricks will be used to restore the city to
its former splendor. Vance Kitira tries to support local
artisans whenever possible, and offering authentic Thai
Brick trays to our customers is an opportunity to bring
a bit of ancient culture to the western world as well. |
